⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Marine the Raccoon
Age: 9
Canon: Sonic Rush Adventure (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Canon Point: post-Endgame of Sonic Rush Adventure

Background: (Link is to her canon backstory as well as what happened in Sonic Rush Adventure, the only game she's been in.)

Personality: Marine is... extreme. She's loud, she's pushy, and to a lot of people, she's just annoying. However, she is very adventurous, fearless, and inventive.

She's a bit over-confident and lacking effective empathy. She doesn't seem to relate to people or their problems as much as she does her own. Whatever she feels like doing always takes precedent over what would be better for her friends or even the greater good. She's been known to march straight into trouble despite any warnings or advice to do otherwise. Even if it puts her in danger, she'll do it. In that sense, she's also a bit stubborn. Her recklessness may stem more from poor judgment than haughtiness, though.

The first thing one would notice about Marine is probably how loud she is. She's almost always yelling and many of the things she yells are orders. Since she has gone without parents or direct supervision, she hasn't had to practice good discipline. She is constantly barking orders at her koala neighbors, for example. They nervously comply, so she has no real reason to stop. Though she's gotten better since her big adventure with Blaze the Cat, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Tails, she's still prone to being pretty pushy.

She's also simply hyper in general. She has tons of energy to spend and is very driven to achieve her dreams and goals. Her biggest dream is to explore the world by sea. Well, seeing as how up until recently she wasn't entirely aware of places to go that were inaccessible by sea, she may have redacted that last bit and expanded her dream to include flying and even hiking, too. It's just that getting there by sea would be the easiest for her considering she's very familiar with the ocean, having grown up on Windmill Island, and because she's had a lot of experience building waterborne ships. ...Building and crashing ships, that is.

She has talent. She was able to construct a working ship by herself and aided Tails when he helped them develop better watercrafts. Naturally, being only 8 years old, she has a lot to learn still, but that definitely won't keep her from trying and learning. So much of her drive stems from how miserable she is on her home island, she's practically guaranteed to construct a working ship to escape her island before she accomplishes any other milestone in her life. Even if she did finally get away, her drive would be ever present; she's realized it's a hobby she really enjoys, and if she winds up somewhere that doesn't have bodies of water, she'll just build a different vehicle type. After all, she has watched Tails build a really impressive ship capable of crossing dimensions.

Though she was only capable of observing while Tails constructed the SS Tornado EX, she has the attitude of someone who did the entire thing herself. Everyone must know how talented, smart, capable, and strong she is. It's a big reason she orders the Koala Crew around: it gives her a chance to exercise dominance. Her brashness and self-centeredness aren't entirely conscious traits; she simply can't stand the thought of anyone thinking she's at all incapable of doing the things she wants to do. She feels that if anyone doesn't believe she's good at what she does, they will make fun of her, ditch her, or just be mean in general. It's a very touchy subject that causes her to get very, VERY defensive.

On a similar note, she's not very self-aware and doesn't really understand when she goes too far and makes herself unlikable. When you think about it, she had no reason to think it put anyone off until recently; she had no family to tell her it was a bad way to behave, and any other people she interacted with just tolerated it no matter how loud she got. It only became apparent to her (only slightly apparent, but still...) when she tried to tag along with Sonic, Tails, and Blaze on their quest to stop Eggman Nega. They kicked her off the team, and after Marine tried to get Blaze's lost scepter back on her own, Sonic and Blaze had to rescue her and teach her that pushing people around and storming off into danger is the kind of behavior that will cause her to lose friends. It was only when she agreed to work with them as a team that they welcomed her back. It was a humbling experience, and she's calmed down significantly since then. Her strength of character is still firmly in place, but she's more considerate and toned down than she was before.

Abilities:
  • Intelligence: she's very bright when it comes to mechanics. She's able to construct large crafts with minimal available materials. They don't always function properly, but the fact that she comes close at such a young age and without any proper training is a big indicator of her capabilities.
  • Possible water powers: while not explained in the events of Sonic Rush Adventure, she was definitely capable of summoning SOME kind of magic power to turn the tide of battle. It can be assumed the power is made up of water due to the fact that she has a similar naming convention to Blaze the Cat, who appropriately possesses fire powers.
  • Able to "speak" to dolphins and possibly other marine animals: she was able to convince a group of dolphins to let her and Tails ride around on them, so there has to be something of importance there

Alignment: Aiada: Marine doesn't seem driven or affected much by sadness, anger, courage, despair, or trust as much as she seems to be driven to be the best at everything. When she isn't, she gets upset, which indicates her drive is fueled by envy or resentment. She could really use to be more accepting of not only her failures but also herself in general.

Other: She has a canonically bad Australian accent. It's exaggerated and inaccurate, but it's still hers.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample: Test drive

[3rd Person]

Marine skipped through the city streets with a spring in her step. Sure, she had no idea what was going on and had only been there a little while, but... so much of the city was built around some sort of "odd old-style mechanical thingos!" Marine adored mechanics, especially transportation-based crafts, and was sure there had to be some great things to learn while she was here. She could worry about getting home later.

..Oh, who was she kidding? She hated her home. A boring island with no friends.

As she skipped past a store sporting some impressive, ornate metal goggles in the windows, she noticed that the glass seemed to be bending. Bending and curving in a strange, almost fluid way. She stopped and stared at it with confusion. Almost immediately after she stopped to look at it, it reverted back to its flat, normal surface.

"Well. THAT was bonkers," she muttered to herself.

She wondered what could have caused such a strange occurrence. Was this place not strapped to the laws of physics? If so, how could she learn about them to ensure her future ships would work? She was starting to wish Tails, her fellow mechanical friend, was with her, too. He was always great at explaining things to her.

Her pace slowed once again as she realized how much she missed him. She missed him and Blaze. A lot. Would she ever see them again? Were they looking for her at this very moment? What if they thought she was dead? How could she let them know she was alive and well? It was finally sinking in how alone she was in this foreign place.

Without warning, the store window to her side burst into a cloud of glass shards, flying out in every direction. Marine instinctively ducked to the ground and covered her head. Once the rain of broken glass let up and settled on the ground, she sprang to her feet and pointed to the bystanders inside the store.

"CROIKEY!! 'OO THOUGHT IT WAS A RIPPER IDEA TO THROW A BRICK THROUGH A WINDOW?!" she yelled while shaking her fist. "You could've taken my eye out!! 'Ow would I build my ships THEN, ya dills?! Watch what you're bloomin' DOING!!"

When the innocent shoppers looked on with startled and troubled expressions, Marine threw her arms into the air in frustrated defeat and stomped off.

"Yobbos."

She hadn't noticed the streetlamps behind her glowing intensely and rotating through the entire color spectrum, and she didn't notice them fade back to a mild, white flicker as she got further away.

Marine walked onward down the sidewalk while she cooled down, occasionally brushing off some broken glass from her shirt and shoulders. She hadn't signed up for this. She was a good person, wasn't she? This was so unfair, she thought. First she's transported to a strange world, then she nearly gets hit in the face by a hateful person with a brick! She hadn't noticed a brick anywhere but didn't know what else it could have been. That was some very thick glass.

------

The sun was setting and Marine was experiencing her first night in this unfamiliar city. She hugged herself to keep warm as she walked. Her feet were becoming sore. She never needed shoes designed for long walks on hard ground. Her island was made up of soft sand and dirt, after all. To make things worse, partly cloudy skies made way for darker clouds and eventually rain. When she felt the first drop on her ear, she cursed to herself and looked to the sky.

"Roight. Rain. Just what I need."

But among the clouds hovered... What was that? A tower with a crystal floating above it? No, not a crystal. It was too dark to be a crystal. ...No, wait. It WAS a crystal. It was just almost pitch black. It was like nothing she'd ever seen. For a moment, she forgot where she was and wondered if it was usable the same way other rock-like items were usable as building materials for her ships back on her island. Oh, the things she could build with that crystal if she could nab it. Surely it could supply her with enough material to make a hovercraft. Yes, a hovercraft with a massive turboshaft engine! She could make it a hovercraft/helicopter!! The surge of inspiration made her squeal out loud.

At that moment, she noticed something strange out of the corner of her eye. Some of the cobblestones lining the street were hovering and floating upwards above the ground. There didn't seem to be anything suspending them, and there definitely wasn't enough wind to cause a funky sort of updraft. Maybe this place really did have weirder physics than back home. She poked one of the floating stones and watched it float away gently. She placed her hands on her hips while she thought about what could have caused such a thing. If the physics here really were different, she'd need to learn new kinds of ships to build that would adequately get a person from point A to point B safely. It dawned on her that she could learn some really great things to build--things she'd never even considered back home--and became so excited, she hopped up and down in place. It made her giddy just thinking about it.

Suddenly, all of the stones that were hovering shot straight up into the air.

"GYAAHHH!!" Marine screamed in shock.

She was taken aback and stumbled backwards, landing square on her behind into a cold puddle. She barely noticed that she was soaking wet. Now, this was VERY odd, she thought. Could she have triggered that sort of reaction in the rocks? Was it because she jumped up and down? The more she thought about it, the less sense in made. She was becoming more and more afraid upon realizing how truly chaotic the place could be.

"This place is outright barmy!! I 'ate it 'ere! I miss my world and my physics! I miss my mates! I want to go 'ome!"

And with that thought, all of the floating rocks fell to the ground in a barrage of light splashes. Stunned, she looked side to side to see if it could have been caused by anyone else. There was no one nearby. Maybe she was triggering it, she realized. But how? What was she doing that could have triggered those reactions? She wasn't doing anything consistently through each shift in gravity. ..Except for what she was thinking about. Each change happened at the points where she became the most emotional: when she became grumpy when it started to rain, when she thought about what kind of ships she'd like to build, and then how much she missed home.  Could the rocks react to her positive and negative thoughts?

To test her theory, she tried to think of something emotional. Since the stones seemed to go upward when she thought about her ships, she again thought about what kind of materials she would use with the dark crystal to concoct some great combinations. The more ideas she got, the more stones began hovering.

Marine smiled. She was amazed that such a phenomenon could exist. She <i>would</i> need to learn some new physics, she thought. New physics that might even mean creating a ship that could float simply by thinking good thoughts! Such a thing would be free to maintain and even better: she could charge whatever she wanted for admission! She'd be RICH!

She was caught off guard when the floating rocks shot in every direction, some slamming against the walls of the buildings around her. It scared her so much, she staggered back onto her feet and took off running.  Okay, maybe she'll consider her options when she's not around any murderous cobblestones.

Game/Series: Sonic Rush Adventure / Sonic the Hedgehog
Canon Point: post-Endgame
Age & Birthday: 12, July 22nd
Dorm or Living Arrangement: East 2
Preferred House: Swordfighter

Personality:
This thing was 4 painstaking paragraphs long. *sob* Uh, she's pushy and wants to recruit everyone to be her shipmates, she's self-absorbed, she's loud, she's adventurous, she's more obedient and mature than she was in SRA, blah blah blah

Marine is... extreme. She's loud, she's pushy, and to a lot of people, she's just annoying.

This is how she's coped with growing up without parents. She's a bit short on discipline and heavy on self-absorption. She was never taught how to be considerate of others or to look before you leap. But then, she's never really needed to. Her koala friends humor her every whim and essentially let her do whatever she wants. When a home is as small an island as hers, there isn't much around to threaten anybody. Oh no, a storm? Better watch out for the palm trees that never fall over or the complete lack of any structures that could break apart. Why take a moment to think about something when there are virtually no consequences to doing it right now?

Marine does show a bit of an excessive level of energy, though. On the surface, it may appear that she's eager and possibly greedy. Deep down, she has more energy than she can deal with. While a lot of her vigor comes from a desire for attention she never truly received to her satisfaction, under the microscope, a more scholarly evaluation would most likely find she suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. If she'd learn how to stop and think about things for a second, she'd find it very hard to calm down on her own. She just can't seem to expend all that vigor no matter how loud she shouts or how hard she studies.

She loves boats, by the way. Ships, boats, water crafts of all kinds. Mostly it stems from a deep desire to escape her bland old island and set off to new adventures and places to explore. The furthest she's ever made it away from home was to the neighboring islands a hop, skip, and jump away from hers. There really wasn't much there, either. BORING. She's confident she's able to build a seaworthy ship herself and sail away from the blasted ennui. All it'll take is the right kind of Do-It-Yourself books and ship supplies, both obtainable through koala channels. She finds it hard to focus on books for long periods of time, but she always comes back to them with the drive to learn and build. Is her new ship completed yet? Nope? Back to work. Honestly, if she ever finally scratches that itch to engineer amazing ships, she may find she enjoys reading as a hobby in general. She's actually pretty intelligent when it comes to engineering and vehicle construction, but her lack of attention span leaves crucial holes in her understanding of the construction process.

Though she is self-absorbed, she does have a bit of a soft spot for her bestest best friend, Blaze the Cat. She latched onto Blaze when they first met and refuses to let go. Blaze doesn't baby Marine nor does she let her get away with extreme recklessness. She treats her like a little sister -- a familial relationship Marine never knew but always wanted. Admittedly, Marine seems to get much more out of their relationship than Blaze does, but it's still appreciated. A lot of her koala neighbors have stopped visiting her due to her restlessness and demanding pushiness, so she's not unaware of Blaze's tolerance of her antics. She sees the two of them as peas in a sea-salted pod who will go on amazing escapades into the unknown until they both wash up dead on the shore of an incredible exotic beach somewhere.

While her obnoxiousness was on full display during the events of Sonic Rush Adventure (see below), she came out of the event with a few notable lessons learned. 1) Blaze will get mad if she does something without thinking, even if Marine is (in her mind) more than capable of handling the fallout; 2) If she plays as part of the team, she'll walk away with more friends than she had before; i.e. people like her better if she cooperates; and 3) She doesn't HAVE to be loud to get people to listen to her. It's not a requirement for attention. It helps in some cases, but she'd prefer positive interactions over negative encounters, so she'd best lower her voice when in doubt just in case.

Backstory:
This one was seven. Basically she did Sonic Rush Adventure, Blaze left, she spent years in her dimension working on a ship to take her to Blaze, it worked, she crash-landed, and now she's at SBG.

Marine doesn't remember her parents. As far back as she can remember, she's lived alone on a desert island, called Southern Island, with koalas for neighbors. And friends. And family. They are the closest thing she's ever known to family, aside from Blaze. They practically raised her themselves if only by providing for her what she needed to survive. They built her a hut to live in and they brought her food and supplies on a regular basis. None of them felt right disciplining her, so sure enough, she ran around taking them all for granted and getting away with murder.

Because there was nothing to see or do on her home island, she was constantly restless and wanted so desperately to leave in a grand, luxurious sea vessel that could take her away from the lonely, mind-numbingly boring days and out to new sights, sounds, smells, and people to meet. She taught herself how to read and eventually how to read blueprints. With books on engineering and ship construction provided on request by the Koala Crew, she studied and planned out ship after ship, all of which fell apart on the initial test drive. She learned from each folly, but she was really getting nowhere fast. The lack of results just made her more and more eager to succeed, to think better, and to try harder. She'd build the best ship, dernit, or die trying.

One day, Princess Blaze the Cat stopped by her desolate island seeking a lot Sol Emerald. Marine had no idea what a Sol Emerald was but insisted one had to be around there somewhere. The prospect of having a cool, older best friend was too enticing to resist, so she did her best to convince Blaze it was nearby in order to keep her around as long as possible. When it came to light that Marine had lied, Blaze was peeved, but despite her aggravation, she realized that all the time they'd spent searching together was the closest thing to experiencing friendship the two had ever known, so while Blaze went to continue on her mission, she assured Marine she'd come back someday when the Sol Emeralds were safe.

Now, more motivated than ever, Marine strived to build a functional ship the two could sail off on together. She'd build a ship Blaze LOVED to sail on, dernit! A ship that could take them anywhere they wanted where they could be happy together and free of boring islands and isolation.

It was during one of her maiden voyages crashes that Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower crash landed on her island. Their arrival coincided with the arrival of the evil Captain Whisker and by extension Dr. Eggman, who wanted the Sol Emeralds for himself. Much adventure was had. (Sonic Rush Adventure summary ahoy.)

After Sonic and Tails departed for their home dimension, Marine had gotten a taste of NEW types of friendship, and boy did she want more. Having learned a thing or two during her time spent around Tails, she set off to build a new ship -- one that could not only sail, but fly. Before she could finish, however, Blaze left the island for her own reasons. Devastated and lonely once again, Marine adjusted her approach; she wouldn't just build the best ship in the world, she'd build the best ship across  dimensions. Through the use of some verrrrrry hard to find books on dimension hopping and a VEEERRRRRY large amount of parts and supplies, she was eventually able to build a ship capable of following Blaze into Sonic's world. ...Or what she thought was Sonic's world.

As you'd expect, Marine's ship broke apart during its landing. As it turns out, it tracked Blaze to her location at an odd school focused on fighting in friendly brawls. ...Odd choice of residence. But hey, she, Blaze, Sonic, and Tails were all together again! Good times.

And then the world blew apart and now Smash Academy is a floating mansion island thing caught in a void of nothingness. Swell.

Anything Else?: She has a horribly stereotypical Australian accent. That, and she may or may not have water powers similar to Blaze's fire powers...

In-Character 1st person sample: I had two separate ones on here. Please don't make me write them again.

In-Character 3rd person sample: And two of these, too. Ugh.

Blaze is like a big sister to Marine. ...A bit of an unwilling one, but a big sister, nonetheless. Marine simply adores her. She always insists on coming along on Blaze's duties but is often rebuked and sent home. She gets separation anxiety when Blaze is gone for long periods of time. Part of it has to do with just missing her, but another part is envy over being able to get away from her trashheap of an island home.

Tails is Marine's... well, whatisn'the? The two have all but admitted their feelings to each other at this point. She admires his skill with machinery but also wants to prove she can be as good at them as he is. She considers him a close friend, and honestly, she hopes someday they'd be more than just tinkering buddies. He often goes home to Sonic's world and misses him more than she cares to admit.

Sonic is more of a friend-of-a-friend than a straight-up friend due to the fact that she spends most of her time with either Blaze or Tails when they're around. That doesn't mean the friendship between him and her is awkward; of the four of them all, they simply have the least in common. Marine still loves his fearlessness and drive for adventure.

Dear Journal,

Crikey, have you looked out the window lately? It's a swirly void of nothingness as far as the eye can see! Oh, and not to mention the school is now a creepy MANSION! What in the heck happened?

Well, as far as I can remember, everything was ace until a few months ago. A moon appeared out of nowhere and decided our planet needed a little ironing out, so it chucked itself in our direction like a bloke gone crackers. Monsters appeared around the city, too, and caused all kinds of ruckus! Poor Blaze was scared, but I told her she'll be apples. I wasn't sure it would be, but I had to be strong for my best mate! I didn't want her worrying too much!

We put up a good fight, but in the end, I guess the moon really did iron us into oblivion. We all woke up on this danged island with no way to escape. What's worse is that I don't have a good source of ship parts!! I used almost all of it to build my latest baby, but I had to make adjustments once I discovered I'd need to hop dimensions again if I wanted to get out of here.

So, journal, this may be the last time I write in you from Smash Aca Smash Isl from Smash. If all goes right, I'll find a way back to our world and rescue Blaze and Sonic from all the barmy! Wish me luck!

-Captain Marine

In-Character 3rd person sample:

Marine skipped around her newest ship, stopping a moment to make last-minute adjustments to a rudder here, a bolt there. Her baby was almost ready to go. The island's similarity to the dull-as-heck Southern Island back home was a great motivator to finish it and get out. Nothing to look at on the horizon? Yep. Uncomfortably small living space? Yeah. Suffocating creepy sense of isolation? Bingo. Get moving.

With the tightening of one last bolt, Marine wiped the sweat on her forehead with her arm and stared up at the giant, metal fruit of her labors. It was quite a beauty; not only was it able to gently hover, but it utilized a zone-hopping add-on she'd found in the old Academy Auto Club parts heap. If the memory of those blueprints was correct, it'd send her straight to Final Destination City. ..And into FREEDOM! Those plans were foolproof, so the was no way her spotty memory could mess it up. None.

"Awright, my beauty, anchors aweigh! Off to adventure," she cheered as she flipped switches and turned dials on the dashboard. The automated glass hood clicked in place as it closed over the cockpit and sealed it air-tight. As the engines roared, the vehicle began to hover. A little wobbly, but good enough, she figured. With all launch gear in place, she peered down at the mansion and waved goodbye.

"Hooroo, spooky mansion! Don't worry, Blaze! I'll come back for you! Just you waaaaaait!"

As she pushed up on the accelerator, the ship vibrated and creaked. As far as she could tell from the mess of dark clouds flowing over the cockpit, she was travelling very fast and thus naturally in the right direction. Just a little faster and she should be home free in their old dimension!

Marine came to out on the lawn, surrounded by smoking piles of metal. She rubbed her head as she sat up, blinking rapidly.

"Wha... what 'appened? Am I 'ome? Where's my ship? Where's my baby?"

As her fuzzy vision came into focus, she realized that the piles of demolished metal and engine parts surrounding her WAS her ship, or what was left of it. She slouched over in disappointment as the reality of her failure finally hit her.

"Oh. I crashed. Again."

With weeks of hard work down the drain and yet another failure under her belt, she flopped down on her back and sighed. Not again.

"Ugh! What 'appened this time? It 'ad to 'ave been that cooling system! I woulda made it if it wasn't bizzo! Ohh, I 'ope Blaze didn't see all that..."

None.
